Project: ShopNBC.tv redesign
Services: Interaction Design
Deliverables: Interaction Model, Wireframes, Functional Specifications
Working with Schematic, we redesigned the video-based Flash website for NBC's home-shopping cable television channel, ShopNBC, putting users more in control of their viewing and shopping exprience.
The Product: A website focused on providing high-quality, live video feeds from the ShopNBC cable TV channel plus a wealth of additional, on-demand videos and product information.
The Challenge: While keeping a large-sized video, ShopNBC wanted to integrate a variety of additional features and functionality into their existing site, including the ability to find shows by date/time, category, brand, and other characteristics. The user needed to be able to search for past shows, watch only the parts of the shows they wanted, access product details, and purchase products on the spot. All of this had to fit in a relatively small screen space, and be easy to use and understand.
The Solution: By strategically using the area around the large video, we were able to design the experience to maximize functionality within a limited amount of space. We created multiple menus that open and close over parts of the video where the products are not actually being displayed. Sharing this space gave the user a great deal of options for finding the desired shows, as well as viewing detailed product information. The result: tons of user control, beautiful big videos, and a simple, enjoyable user experience.
